Volunteer reflection from Yong-en Food Distribution
Volunteer: Chloe Chang
What has been encouraging to you as you served in YEFD?
The strong support I received from the leaders. I went through a tough season when certain issues and thoughts were more sensitive to me, and some questions from certain households felt overwhelming. The leaders were understanding, and they reassigned me to another area to ensure I was supported during that time.
What is a story that comes to mind that has been unforgettable?
Initially, Mdm S always felt like she was imposing on us, and our interactions were brief—she’d often say we could leave right away. However after a few months, we started to notice a change. Now, she greets us with excitement whenever we arrive and asks for prayers each time, despite being a non-Christian. She also holds our hands when we pray. It’s amazing how God can work.
What is one encouragement you have for a new volunteer signing up for YEFD?
For some, you may be one of the few sources of social interaction the beneficiaries have for the entire month. It may not just be about the food. Every little effort counts! :) You never truly know what seed(s) God can grow through you, be it for the beneficiaries or yourself!
What is one thing God has taught you through serving at YEFD?
I started joining YEFD because I had experienced deep loneliness during the isolation of COVID. Looking back, I realise that God allowed me to go through that season to help me serve others at YEFD with more compassion and purpose. The experience has been greater than I had expected!
