Volunteer reflection from Yong-en Food Distribution
Volunteer: Gareth Yip
What has been encouraging to you as you served in YEFD?
It was encouraging to see fellow volunteers coming down monthly, taking time out of their busy schedules to make an effort to distribute the food. We also grew closer to the the families that we visit, sharing with each other life updates and seeing them enjoying the simple things in life. It’s also encouraging to see how God works in their lives (Mdm S. with the cross to protect her home, Mr S. and family providing them with the support they needed when his mother passed on, Mdm Y. always sharing her life experience and how she overcame her challenges), feels like God telling us that His work spreads far and wide across everybody and that giving comes in many forms and methods. A small action really goes a long way for the beneficiaries!
What is a story that comes to mind that has been unforgettable?
Mdm. Y’s story has always been inspiring, how she brought her kids up, going through cancer and issues with her body. No matter how tough things were to her, she always believed in God (Allah in her case but it’s still her belief in her God) and God really provided her with a strong mind and giving heart. Also that even with the discomfort of her body she still always serve the residents, cooking for big events like Hari raya. There’s always a sense of homely feeling when visiting her which is nice to experience! Also Mdm S. asking for prayers everytime we visit her is very unique considering her situation!
What is one encouragement you have for a new volunteer signing up for YEFD?
Provide for others just as God provides for us! Let’s do our best to provide something more apart from just food distribution!
