Volunteer reflection from Yong-en Food Distribution
Volunteer: Elaine Gay
What has been encouraging to you as you served in YEFD?
How the relationships have deepened over time. Their excitement as they look forward to our monthly visits excites me too.
What is one thing God has taught you through serving at YEFD?
Humility in receiving (rather than giving, giving, giving) and patience as some conversations can take longer (and repetitive) or being in uncomfortable living conditions. I think it's very natural to think that going out to the community is all about what I can do for others/giving, but allowing ourselves to receive from them has been very humbling - listening to their stories, their life experiences; it's been a great privilege to enter their world and support them.
What is a story that comes to mind that has been unforgettable?
I have been blessed with many memorable stories as I journey with the same household for more than 2 years now. I recall one about a beneficiary's beautiful faith conversion story. I've known her for 2 years, but it has never dawned upon me to ask about her faith story. In fact, it was prompted by a new befriender who was grouped with me that week. Out of her curiosity of an interesting tattoo on the palm of the beneficiary, led to her testimony of how God rescued her from her Taoist medium days :')
What is one encouragement you have for a new volunteer signing up for YEFD?
Go with no expectation to "perform" but an open heart to receive, love and notice glimpses of God's grace in their lives. Never underestimate little acts of kindness. Finally, relationships takes time, be patient, it's worth it!
How can we pray with you for YEFD?
“The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few” - I pray that God will increase our desire to share God's love and courage to enter another's lives, that we may never lack in manpower! Finally, you're invited to our after-work party with the community of Jln Kukoh. The "party" is what you make of it :)
