Volunteer reflection from Safe Place Alumni

What has been encouraging to you as you served ?

Serving alongside our cosy team of three and seeing how each of them goes out of their way to care for the alumni mums has been inspiring. It has also been deeply humbling to witness the resilience of the alumni mums as they navigate a society that often overlooks this vulnerable community of single mothers.

What is one thing God has taught you through serving?

That God is the Saviour, not me. When I fell into problem-solving mode, it lead to a lot of discouragement and anxiety, because the problems are multi-faceted and even systemic. God taught me to just come with a servant heart, and leave the heavy lifting to Him.

What is a story that comes to mind that has been unforgettable?

Seeing other parents celebrate their children's birthdays with fancy parties, an alumni mom wanted to give her daughter a nice party at least once. She ended up overspending and didn't have enough for her own meals that week. This story resonates with me because it reflects my own struggle with an inner critic that tells me I'm not enough. I am reminded that my true worth is found not in performance, but in my identity in Christ.

What is one encouragement you have for a new volunteer signing up for SPA?

Don’t underestimate the power of just showing up! I saw how God uses availability more than ability.

How can we be praying with you for SPA?

Often abandoned by their partners or families, many alumni mothers have to navigate life without basic support systems. I hope Safe Place Alumni can be a constant resource in both spiritual encouragement and practical help.

Any other thing you would like to share?

Serving at Safe Place Alumni opened my eyes to the everyday privileges I’ve long taken for granted. Like dropping the kids off with their grandparents, or securing a full-time job. These are luxuries out of reach to many alumni mothers. It’s a humbling reminder of God’s call in Micah 6:8, "to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God", as we show up for those who are often left unseen.
