Why We Fast

Fasting is the voluntary act of giving up a good gift from God so that our hearts are reoriented toward him. Even good things can slowly take first place in our lives. We remind our hearts that we need God more than his gifts. Fasting is not a hunger strike or a way to pressure God into giving us what we want. It is turning our desires toward him. It is choosing dependence over control.

When God is supreme over even the hunger in our hearts then he is truly supreme in everything. Psalm 73:25-26 says, “Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” When we fast, we are saying that we want God more than these things.

Traditionally, fasting involves abstaining from food and using hunger as a prompt to pray. Some may undertake water or liquid fasts, or abstain from certain foods. Let us fast meaningfully by giving up something significant in our regular diet that will remind us to pray. Fasting from technology or social media can also serve this purpose. Each person should fast freely, without coercion, and with a clear conscience before God. Those with medical conditions should consult a doctor beforehand.

As we prepare, let us ask God by his Spirit to soften our hearts and the hearts of all at RHC. Our hope is that, as we practice fasting as a church, we would reduce reliance on the things of this world and redirect our desires toward God, depending on Him for all things.
