Freedom in Christ Alone

The Galatians are turning back to the enslavement of self-justification by the Law and “elementary principles of the world” from which they have already been set free! Paul pleads desperately with the Galatians. He reminds them of their faith in the past, and he urges them to return to the faith they once held, when they first received Paul and believed the gospel he preached.

The Certainty of Sonship

In Old Testament times, God’s people, though children, looked no different from slaves as they were under a guardian – the law.  We ourselves were once slaves to the elementary principles of this world, trying and failing to justify ourselves by our works.  But God has now sent his Son into the world, and through Jesus we have been adopted as God’s children.  Because we are God’s children through Christ, God has also sent the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of his own Son, into our hearts to remind us of our status as his children.

The Guardian, The Son, And The Promised Family

Paul is explaining to the Galatians about the purpose of the law which is to reveal our sins and how we are in need of a savior. The law was never designed to give us life, and hence is not contrary to the promises given by God to ‘Abraham and his seed’.  We are justified only by believing in what Christ has done for us and we don’t need to be under the law anymore. We are accepted as children of God and Abraham’s seed and heirs when we believe in Christ Jesus who died on the cross and accomplished the law on our behalf.

Righteous By Promise

There are two ways to righteousness – relying on ourselves to keep the law, or relying on God to keep his promise. As God's covenant is kept and fulfilled for us in Christ, we now are able to receive righteousness by faith in him.

Faith From First To Last

The way that we become God’s people is by the Spirit working in us through our faith in Christ. This is the same way that we continue in the Christian life - the Spirit working in us as we believe God’s word of blessing to us.  Therefore, we are to hear his Gospel and respond with faith.

Gospel Consciousness

When Jesus died on the cross, he fulfilled the law and we are no longer under the law and have no need to gain righteousness through it.  Thus to return to the law is sinful and undermines the work of Jesus. We are justified by faith and live by faith in the Son of God.

Unfathomable Grace

God has graciously created a solution to our problem of sin and graciously reveals this Good News to us out of his good pleasure.  Those who have received the gospel are transformed and glorify God by ascertaining & believing the true gospel, proclaiming the gospel and bestowing God’s grace upon others.

The Reasons: To Die in our Place

We are justified (declared righteous) by God through faith in Jesus Christ, and not by relying on our own works. Salvation is entirely by grace alone, through faith alone, and in Christ alone.

Adopted Into God's Family

Adoption by God is the greatest blessing of the Gospel and changes how we relate to God and how we relate to others. Our adoption by God has immense implications for how we treat other believers, our helpers, and how we view earthly adoption and foster care.

Boasting in the Cross of Christ

The cross of Christ is not simply something that Christians 'believe' in, but something that Christians boast in, glorying in what Christ has done for our sakes. Boasting in the cross of Christ gives us a new identity whilst giving us no grounds for superiority towards others, because our new identity in Christ is something He has freely given to us.
