Most of us only think of Matthew as one of Jesus’ disciples, but the gospels show us that before Matthew followed Jesus he was a tax collector. Tax collectors were labeled traitors by their Jewish brothers for working on behalf of the Roman oppressors, and feared as extortionists who would use wicked means to squeeze money out of their own people. And yet we see Jesus coming and calling Matthew to follow him, leaving behind his affluent life in order to become Jesus’ disciple. Matthew’s life becomes a microcosm of the message of his gospel, that Jesus has come not for the righteous, but for sinners, to redeem them and bring God’s Kingdom to bear upon the world.
It’s not surprising then that themes of discipleship and following Jesus run strongly through his gospel. Matthew is writing to a very Jewish audience and so he takes much time to show Jesus as the fulfillment of God’s promises to His people in the Old Testament. Jesus has come to bring the Kingdom of God to earth, which Matthew literally sees demonstrated before Him.
This all is made possibly by the climax of Jesus’ life, his death and resurrection. Matthew covers this in great detail, giving us a glimpse of Jesus’ final hours, inner turmoil, beatings, trial and crucifixion. However, like any good story the apparent sadness is turned to joy when Jesus triumphantly is raised from the dead, and commissions his followers to go and make disciples of all nations.
