Reading the Bible together – 11 Apr

Judges

The book is named after the title given to the 12 leaders (“judges”) of Israel during the period between Joshua and Samuel. The judges came from various tribes and regions of Israel, and they likely held varying degrees of influence over their neighboring regions and tribes. It consists of various blocks of material about different judges. The events in Judges took place in the period between Joshua’s death (either mid-14th or late-13th century b.c.) and the rise of Samuel and Saul (mid-11th century).

Judges depicts the downward spiral of Israel’s national and spiritual life into chaos and apostasy, showing the need for a godly king to lead it (17:6; 21:25). It was written to show the consequences of religious apostasy and to point the way to a king who would lead the people to God. The book of Judges shows that Israel began to disobey God even during the time of Joshua. This disobedience continued and grew more serious throughout the period of the judges. Time and again Israel turned its back on God and embraced other gods. Israel’s history unfolded in this period in a cyclical or repetitive way: each cycle took Israel further downward in its debasement and apostasy. By the end of the book, Israel had violated its covenant with God in almost every way imaginable. Continue reading

Dear RHC

It’s amazing to think that the Easter weekend is only 2 days away!

I wanted to write to encourage you to use Easter as a time to meditate on the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus as recorded in the gospels. Why not read each gospel’s account of these events one day at a time, starting with Matthew’s account tomorrow (Thursday) and finishing up with John’s account on resurrection Sunday? Reading the Bible together – 1 Apr

Mark

The early church fathers affirm that the Apostle Peter passed on reports of the words and deeds of Jesus to his attendant and writer, John Mark, who wrote this Gospel. Although John Mark was not an eyewitness of Jesus, he was Peter’s writer, who wrote down accurately what he could remember of Peter’s words.

Internal evidence also supports the testimony that Peter stands behind Mark’s Gospel. Mark’s account is especially vivid when recounting incidents involving Peter. It has also been observed that is a structural proximity between Peter’s Caesarea speech (Acts 10:34–43) and the Gospel of Mark.

The Gospel was most likely written in in the mid- to late-50s AD. The ultimate purpose and theme of Mark is to present and defend Jesus’ universal call to discipleship. This fact implies that discipleship for Mark is essentially a relationship with Jesus, not merely following a certain code of conduct. Continue reading
